The 3 Richest US Presidents in History
Presidents have always had to divest their business interests to avoid conflicts while in office, but that hasn’t kept some U.S. leaders from amassing insane sums of money while out of office (or in office, looking at you #45).
Now, it goes without saying that all presidents become millionaires once they leave office, through speaking fees, book deals, pension money, etc. but some have made money far beyond their station.
If you want to know how the richest presidents in U.S. history are, you’ll want to keep reading.
The 3 Richest Presidents in U.S. History
1. Donald J. Trump
While Donald Trump’s net worth is a controversial topic (as is everything else involving Trump), he’s hands down the richest person to ever sit in the presidential office.
Regardless of how much debt he may or may not have, his estimated net worth is at $3.1 billion. He inherited quite a large sum of money from his father in his youth and invested it to build on of the largest real estate empires on the world.
Trump has holdings in luxury apartment buildings, casinos, office, golf course, and hotels. The equity of these holdings alone likely makes him the richest president to ever live.
2. John F. Kennedy
The Kennedy family was a dynastic force in politics for several decades. Despite his untimely death, it is believed that John F. Kennedy had a net worth that hovered around $1 billion.
However, this is a bit misleading, as most that money was held in a trust that his entire family had access to. This fortune was built by JFK’s father, Joseph Kennedy. Kennedy Sr. was a well-accomplished trader in stocks, real estate, and other commodities.
Had he not died so abruptly, JFK may have inherited the entire family trust.
3. George Washington
Despite what you may think of Trump, Washington’s estimated $525 million fortune may have been built in the most nefarious ways out of any U.S. president. Like Trump, Washington’s wealth was primarily derived from various land holds in Washington D.C., New York, Ohio, and Virginia.
Of course, Washington’s crown jewel was Mount Vernon, a 7,000-acre plantation that “employed” over 300 slaves.
In total, it is estimated that Washington owned over 50,000 acres of land. This, in conjunction with his holdings in human livestock, made him one of the richest presidents to ever live.
