The 7 Best Video Game Cosplay Ideas
With the exception of Comic-Con, most conventions used to be relatively unknown. A decade ago, if someone mentioned DragonCon or PAX in a room full of people, few would know what they were talking about.
But these days, cons are attended by millions each year all across the globe. And if you’ve never been to one of these fun events, you’re in for a treat!
From artist alleys to panels, there’s so much to see and do. And then, of course, there’s cosplay.
Cosplay is one of the most popular art forms around the world, with some seriously dedicated pros. And now, you can bring the digital world to real life with cosplay of your very own!
Want to stand out at the next convention? Here are 7 great ideas for video game cosplay that are sure to be a hit.
1. 2B or 9S — NieR: Automata
Without a doubt, one of this year’s biggest standout games is the Yoko Taro directed NieR: Automata. Part shoot-em-up, part hack ‘n’ slash, part existential crisis, NieR is an intense journey from beginning to end.
Of course, the game wouldn’t be so popular without its two protagonists: 2B and 9S.
Both androids are quite stylish, and with a little bit of work, you can replicate these replicas’ looks perfectly.
To pull off this particular video game cosplay, you’ll need:
- Black leather
- White hair dye/a wig
Really, it’s that simple! You can customize the costume, as well.
For instance, 2B’s outfit is a bit revealing. If you prefer your androids on the more modest side, consider a longer skirt and longer leggings. Read more here to get some ideas on long, black blouses or skirts.
Of course, you don’t have to stop there. Use the foam to replicate one of the dozens of weapons you find throughout the campaign. You can even add specific “chip” upgrades to your costume and build a pod of your own.
2. Solid Snake — Metal Gear Solid
Snake? Snake?! SNNAAAAAAKE?!
Few characters capture the silliness of video games quite like Solid Snake. Sure, the Metal Gear saga isn’t always meant to be amusing. In fact, as MGS 3 and V proved, it can be quite poignant.
But there’s just no denying that Solid Snake is a fun character. From his uber-serious attitude to his ridiculous quotes (“I’m just a man who’s good at what he does. Killing.”) Snake is a ton of fun to cosplay as, too.
Fortunately, his costume isn’t particularly complex, either. Classic Snake requires some blue and black camo, while Snake Eater-era Snake just requires camo and a bit of face paint.
For bonus points, don’t forget to bring a cardboard box to hide in. You can even have your friends dress up as guards. When you’re “spotted” have them hold an exclamation mark above their heads.
3. Link — The Legend Of Zelda
Of course, maybe you prefer your cosplay more on the strong, silent side. If that sounds more up your alley, Link is always a great video game cosplay choice.
Walk around a con for fifteen minutes and you’re bound to see at least a dozen Link cosplays.
Like Snake, there’s a lot to choose from when it comes to Link cosplays. There’s always the classic green tunic/Hylian shield, or the cartoonish Wind Waker era.
Or if you want to get really creative, choose one of Link’s alternate costumes from Super Smash Bros.! Think of how much fun it’d be to cosplay as Dark Link, for instance!
4. Mario Or Luigi — Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo’s siblings are some of the most popular pop culture figures of all time, and now you can bring them to life. Video game cosplay doesn’t have to be complex and involved, for instance.
Sometimes all you need is a red hat and shirt and some overalls and you’re good to go. But of course, Mario is nothing without his brother Luigi.
This is the perfect tandem costume, as Luigi’s outfit is virtually identical, except green. It may be simple, but sometimes there’s no beating a classic.
5. Aloy — Horizon: Zero Dawn
Step aside, Lara Croft! 2017 saw the introduction of video gaming’s newest heroine, Aloy from Guerilla Games’ smash hit Horizon: Zero Dawn. This thrilling action-adventure game puts players in the shoes of Aloy as she attempted to traverse a futuristic dystopian Colorado.
If that didn’t sound cool enough, the game has a visual style like no other. Think futuristic meets paleolithic era. As a result, Aloy is one of the more uniquely dressed characters on this list.
And fans are absolutely loving it. Even before the game’s February release, fans were already perfecting their outfits. It’s sleek, stylish, and a whole lot of fun.
6. Roadhog — Overwatch
Anyone who has played even one match of Overwatch can tell you what a pain Roadhog is to play against. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t fun to cosplay as.
7. Ash Ketchum — Pokemon
This is a great choice for any cosplayers who grew up in the late 90s. At the time, few characters were as cool as Pokemon master Ash Ketchum.
And while the Pokemon series is still going strong, few characters are as beloved as Ash. So grab your Pokedex, a hat, a vest, and of course, your trusty Pikachu, and hit the con circuit.
It’s quick and easy cosplay, but it’s fun nonetheless.
