8 Video Game Halloween Costumes That Just Barely Missed The Mark
Boo! Sorry to scare you like that. Anyway, it’s October so that means it’s the SPOOKIEST month of the year. Now, I may have gotten too old to go trick-or-treating without looking like a weirdo, but I don’t think I will ever be too old to wear a good Halloween costume. I almost always dress up as some sort of video game/science fiction character. Heck, I’ve dressed as a character from the Star Wars universe for the past 3 years. However, we’re not here today to talk about the good Halloween costumes. These are costumes that just barely shy away from greatness.
NOTE: These are all costumes that are for sale RIGHT NOW, so I included links to all of them just in case you wanted to waste your money.
1. “Adult Elf Warrior”
Ok, all in all, this costume isn’t bad, right? I mean it has the essential parts to a Link costume: the hair, the green tunic, the hat, the boots, etc. But why is it called ADULT ELF WARRIOR?! There are plenty of licensed Link costumes out there! The best part is that the sword and shield don’t even come with the costume.
This Pac-Man costume is straight up just a circle, probably making it the laziest one on the list. One year in high school I dressed up as Justin Beiber (don’t judge, it was a joke!) by putting on a hat and carrying around an Xbox 360 Rockband microphone. It took me 2 minutes to make. That Justin Beiber costume was way more involved than this one is. Some pretty good Pac-Man costumes exist out there, and this just isn’t one of them. I can just imagine wearing this to a costume party and have somebody say to me, “Whoa bro, are you, like, a yellow pie chart or something?”
3. Ninjago Kai (and a bunch of other Lego costumes)
The reason why this costume missed the mark can be described using one word: legs. JUST LOOK AT THOSE LEGS. I can’t be the only one who feels uneasy about these body proportions, can I? Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Legos (especially the Lego video games) but this…. this is just too spooky. AH!
4. Donkey Kong
I’m just going to say what we’re all thinking; Donkey Kong is eating that man’s face. I wish I could tell you that he is going to be alright, but I can’t confidently say that that’s the case. His face is even contorted in pain. R.I.P. costume model guy, you will be missed.
NO BUT REALLY THE FACE ON THIS IS SO WEIRD. When looking for costumes to include on this list, I found a whole lot that just had really weird looking faces. I personally think that this costume should just have a mask. It would look it look a whole lot better.
Sonic is such an easy target to make fun of nowadays that I almost didn’t put this costume on the list. However, one thing really stood out to make this costume extra bad: the eyes. Why are they painted on like that? It isn’t only this child modeling it either, there are multiple pictures of this costume with the painted on eyes. They don’t even line up with the kid’s eyes at all! Creepy.
6. Mario Riding Yoshi
I think it’s safe to say that almost every video game fan has thought about dressing up as Mario for Halloween at some point. With this in mind, it makes sense for costume companies to change up popular costumes to make them new and exciting… but this is just not right. First off, Yoshi is taller that Mario. Let that sink in. Second, Mario’s poor little legs look so frail and misshapen. Picture them both standing with their feet on the ground. Also, the kid posing for this picture is totally playing the part. I imagine the photo shoot went something like this:
Photographer: “These pictures are sure looking great! Now, could you make a face like you have deformed legs that constantly cause you severe pain?”
Kid: “I can try.”
Photographer: “Yes, THIS is the one!”
Do I really need to say it? It’s just too easy. Use your imagination on this one. Or don’t, it’s probably better off that way.
8. Ash Ketchum
Now, at first glance, this is a pretty neat Ash Ketchum costume, right? The outfit looks pretty accurate, the gloves look sweet, it has everything going on for it. But then your gaze meets the mask and everything changes.
I have never seen anything quite as terrifying as the eyes behind this mask. Maybe it’s that they’re wide open, maybe it’s that we see 2 pairs of adjacent eyes. I don’t know. All I know is that this mask makes me feel unsafe. What’s that? You don’t believe me? Fine, don’t say I didn’t warn you. ENHANCE THAT IMAGE.
All jokes aside, I want to wish everyone a happy Halloween. Have fun out there, be safe, and do everybody a favor by not dressing up with an Ash Ketchum mask.
