Blizzard Announce First New Overwatch Map; Eichenwalde
Blizzard Entertainment took the flight over to Gamescom in Germany to announce that there is a new map coming to Overwatch in September, Eichenwalde.
Eichenwalde is where the post-up turret robot champion named Bastion calls home. In the first trailer, you can see a few Bastion’s scattered around the map that do not currently look operational. This map is supposed to be a “payload” type man, which means that players on one team will have to escort the payload throughout Eichenwalde while the other team tries to stop them.
Blizzard also spoke about the story related side to Eichenwalde. “The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight.”
There is also an Assault portion of the map that can be played. Attacking players have to reclaim the remains of Balderich, some gigantic dude who looks like the character Rienhardt. The defending team has to try and defend their dead buddy while six other players try murdering people to try and grab him.
While no players probably play Overwatch for the lore components, it is nice to have that side available if anyone ever decides to care about it.
Eichenwalde has a very unique look to it. The moss covered stone layout is very appealing. It kind of has a old Scottish Castle vibe that I am really getting into. Either way, this marks the first time that Blizzard has added a map to Overwatch. Blizzard spoke on the added verticality to the map that other current maps just do not have.
