Xbox One Outsells PlayStation 4 in July

With the release of the new Xbox One S on the horizon, Xbox One still managed to outsell PlayStation 4 in the month of July.

According to a tweet from Head of Xbox Marketing, Aaron Greenberg, it is “nice to be back on top.” The July NPD report will not actually be released until next week, but he just could not hold back how happy he was to finally have a winning month.

“We’re honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours,” Mike Nichols, the Chief Marketing Officer of Xbox said to Venturebeat.

PlayStation 4 has been outselling Xbox One for almost the whole cycle. It has not been since October of 2015 that Xbox One has had a winning month, and this time it comes at a very odd month for Microsoft.

Normally, a betting man would say that Xbox One would sell less consoles in the month prior to a new model launch. As you can see, I am not a betting man. After E3 ended in June, consumers must have been pretty excited about the Xbox games and systems line-up, because they just could not wait the extra month to get the newer model. The Xbox One S is already selling very well, and the month of August could be another winning one for Microsoft.

“Following its release last week, the 2TB launch edition of Xbox One S sold out in the U.K. and is nearly sold out in the U.S.,” said Mike Nichols. “Later this month on August 23, we will launch 500GB and 1TB options for Xbox One S at $299 and $349, respectively.”

Sony is holding their own event in September, reports are saying that they will be announcing their own upgraded console. The current trend seems to be: announce new console, then watch sales of the older model soar before the new one comes out. Maybe Sony will get the same treatment. Either way, it is a good time to be playing video games.
