Halo 5: Guardians Viral Marketing Campaign Launched

Last week a Halo-themed Tumblr site called #HUNTtheTRUTH appeared with a countdown ticking down to 6:00 PST on Sunday March 22, 2015. Finally the countdown ended and we finally had the caurtain pulled and it turns out that #HUNTtheTRUTH is a viral campaign that follows the fictional story of Benjamin Giraud, an investigative journalist hired to do a news piece on the Master Chief. However, in the course of his story Mr. Giraud begins to apparently peel back a huge conspiracy behind the Master Chief leading to a quest to find the truth.

This Tumblr page was also accompanied by a 16-second trailer in which a bullet that as it rotates reads: son, abductee, victim, orphan, recruit, soldier, warrior, ally, hero, savior, traitor shatters the Master Chief’s helmet. Many Halo fans speculate that this viral campaign is an attempt to make content revealed in the Halo novels more widespread info, as the first four words all relate to content from those books and 343 Industries has shown more dedication to integrating the books and games into one seamless story.

This is not the first viral campaign attempted by the Halo series, that would be iLoveBees. For those not familiar, iLoveBees was a viral campaign created for Halo 2 back in 2004. Of course instead of a Tumblr page people had to use a website and pay phones in order to get the full story which, much like #HUNTtheTRUTH, was told in audio drama form. iLoveBees was well received, won several awards, and is considered an innovator in Alternate Reality Gaming. Here’s hoping that #HUNTtheTRUTH can pull that kind of critical reception.
