Nintendo Announces New Console In Development Codenamed NX

It has been speculated over the last few months that Nintendo had been working on the successor to the Wii U. However this was officially confirmed yesterday during a company press conference, when president Satura Iwata confirmed the development of a new console, currently codenamed NX.

Mr Iwata reitereated that Nintendo is dedicated to gaming consoles, stating:

“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX,'” he said. “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”

While the company did not specifically state if this device will be a handheld or a home console, with the latest release of the New Nintendo 3DS, as well at the sluggish start of the Wii U console, all signs indicate that this will be the next Nintendo home console.

As stated above, the new console in developemnt in code namex NX, and we can expect to hear more specific details as early as 2016. What would you like to see in Nintendo’s newest console? Let us know in the comments section below!

I’ll reiterate here that Iwata never did say, in so many words, that “NX” was indeed a game console nor was it hardware. It very well could be, but it could also be a separate tablet device like I’ve heard many speculate. Otherwise, we don’t know too much here to guess about, but it’s fun to think about the future.
