The Value Inside the Steam Machines

Last week, a list of Steam Machines to be sold this November was revealed. Most of them also have their prices revealed, so we’ll be looking at the price of their hardware to get a general idea of their value.

 

First, we look at the Alienware Steam Machine. They’re offering 4 models starting at $479.99.  The CPUs for Alienware’s model are listed generally as Intel Core i3 or i5 Dual Core or i5 Quad Core Processors. They also list their GPU as Nvidia Geforce GTX – 2 GB GDDR5. So to get a price here, I compared performance and release dates to determine which processor and graphics card price to use. Let’s look at Alienware’s Steam Machine A.

Alien

  • CPU: Intel Core i3-4360 3.7 GHz – $160
  • GPU: Geforce GTX 760 – $300
  • RAM: 4 GB – $30
  • Storage: WD Blue 500 GB Hard Drive – $50
  • Total: $540

We’ll skip their Steam Machine B as it has nearly the same hardware and look at Steam Machine C.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5 GHz – $215
  • GPU: Geforce GTX 760 – $300
  • RAM: 8 GB – $30
  • Storage: WD Blue 1 TB – $55
  • Total: $630

And Steam Machine D.

  • CPU:  Intel Core i7-4771 3.5 GHz – $315
  • GPU: Geforce GTX 760 – $300

Next, we look at the ALTERNATE Steam Machines. They’re also offering 4 different models and are all priced differently. ALTERNATE does provide CPU and GPU specifications. Let’s look at their first model.

Next, we look at the Falcon Northwest Tiki Steam Machine. This one is a customizable Steam Machine. You can choose the CPU, GPU, and how much RAM and storage you would like in this Steam Machine. It’s also liquid cooled. The price for this ranges from $1,999 to $4,999. For comparison purposes, we will be looking at the highest options available.

The iBuyPower SBX can already be found to purchase as a compact PC. As a Steam Machine, it has the same hardware specifications. It’s price has also been listed.

Maingear’s DRIFT is another compact PC that can be bought now but will also be sold as a Steam Machine in November. This one is also customizable starting at $849, so we’ll look at their high end options. Their description also only states it has Intel Core 4790k, so we’ll assume an i7 4790k.

Material.net’s Steam Machine lists their hardware specifications and price, yet no RAM specifications. We’ll assume 8 GB.

Up next is the NextBox from Next. There are 3 models listed with their hardware specifications. Let’s start from the entry level option.

This Omega Steam Machine comes from OriginPC. It’s also customizable with prices ranging from $899 to $4,999, so we’ll look at their high end possibility.

And lastly we have the Zotac Steam Machine. Zotac also lists their specifications, but their pieces can’t be bought individually. Also, their processor has yet to be released as they’ll be using an Intel 6th Gen Processor. Nonetheless, here are the details.

So there you have a look at of the possible value of the hardware of most Steam Machines coming this November. Of course, this does not include the motherboard or the $50 Steam Controller that each of these bring. This can help give you a general idea of the value of each Steam Machine but is not indicative of their actual value.
