Planetside 2 Now Holds A Guinness World Record

Planetside 2 has made a name for itself through its massive, large-scale battles.  Now, the game is the record holder for largest battle to take place in a first-person-shooter. Ever.

Eurogamer reports that the event, called the Server Smash, shattered the previous record of 999 concurrent players on one server.  It was previously held by a first-person-shooter designed specifically to smash the record, a game called Man Vs. Machine.  That game earned the record in a one-time event held on January 29th, 2012.

The Planetside 2 Server Smash was organized by community site PlanetsideBattles in conjunction with administrative help from Sony Online Entertainment.

The game itself was pretty straightforward, just a “point capture” match on the new continent (server) of Hossin.  Players came out in droves to try and participate.  4,000 of them applied, but only a lucky 1,158 got to play and be a part of the record.

Thousands of spectators on the Twitch stream watched as the three warring factions vied for territory over the course of the match.  Planetside 2 isn’t known for its e-sports potential, but Eurogamer’s Rick Lane describes a thrilling, multi-layered tactical battle that sounded captivating to watch.

In the aftermath of the war, the official Guinness record Planetside 2 now holds is “the greatest number of players simultaneously (in one single instance) in one server of an online FPS videogame.” This is due, in large part, to the very dedicated and passionate player community.

Planetside 2 is out right now for Windows PC and in closed beta for the Playstation 4.  It is a sequel and remake of the 2003 PC title Planetside.
