Sid Meier’s Starships Is Newest Strategy Game From Firaxis

The Civilization series has recently reached for the stars with last year’s Beyond Earth, but Sid Meier is at it again with the newly-announced Sid Meier’s Starships.  Gamespot has the details and a trailer.

Starships seems to be a sequel of sorts to Beyond Earth, where the player assumes control of a fleet of starships searching for their scattered human brethren after the diaspora event of the former.

The trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, instead just setting the stage with some light exposition.  The gameplay will involve customizing and managing your growing fleet of starships as you complete missions, engage in turn-based space combat, and “build a planetary federation.”

Of the game design, Sid Meier tells Gamespot: “My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.”

Publisher 2K Games mentioned that there might be some cross-interaction between Beyond Earth and Starships.  2K was light on details, but players can expect the feature to “enhance and expand upon both game experiences.”  Maybe it will look like some sort of Bioware-type crossover, with civilizations carrying over from one to the other?

Sid Meier’s Starships will launch in spring of this year for PC, Mac, and iPad.  More details to follow.
