Planetside 2 On PS4 Beta Coming This Year

Speaking to Eurogamer, Planetside 2 creative director Matt Higby revealed that a beta for the long-awaited console port will be live by the end of the year.

Planetside 2’s PS4 port was announced in June of 2013, but not much news has surfaced lately. Higby assures us that the team at Sony Online Entertainment has been working diligently. Their main concern, he notes, is to make the game feel like a “full-on console experience” rather than just a port.

Specifically, Higby’s team has focused extensively on the user interface and menu system. Re-working a UI developed for the PC to work well with a controller is a daunting task, but SOE is up to the challenge. In their quest to make Planetside 2 feel like a “native console game” an intuitive UI is a big step.

On the graphical side, players will be glad to hear that Higby is shooting for the two key buzzwords of this generation, 1080p and 60 frames-per-second.

Higby states that the 60 FPS goal isn’t set in stone, and they will drop down to a more manageable 30 FPS if it ultimately means a smoother gameplay experience. The textures, lighting, and particle effects will be equivalent to the “ultra” setting on the PC version of Planetside 2. In other words– beautiful.

Like its PC cousin, the PS4 port of Planetside 2 will feature microtransactions with SOE’s Marketplace Cash system, the same that’s in the PS4 version of DC Universe Online. The items available for purchase on the PS4 version will be the same as the PC items, though there will be no cross-platform play.

Keep an eye out for more updates on Planetside 2 and other Sony properties during the Playstation Experience event this December in Las Vegas.
