Jason Bourne is Born Again

We have known for months now that there was going to be a fifth Bourne film and that the plot would centre on Jeremy Renner’s character, Aaron Cross. However, the fifth film in the series looks like that might change as it is now set to follow the original main character, Jason Bourne, played by the returning Matt Damon. The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director, Paul Greengrass, is also making his comeback to the franchise and will direct the next film.

This news is definitely a sense of surprise, as Paul Greengrass stated in numerous interviews that he felt there was nowhere else to go with Bourne’s character.  However, this must mean that series writers Dan Gilroy and Tony Gilroy might have convinced Greengrass otherwise.

Matt Damon has also stated before that he would not return to the franchise if Paul Greengrass was not going to direct, though his comments did hint that there was always a possibility to go somewhere else with his character:

“I’ve always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We’ve just never been able to come up with a story. So, if any of your viewers have a story, please call Universal and submit it.” He said this during an interview this year with CNBC, which means he may have known something back then.

Matt Damon returning as the killing machine, Jason Bourne.

“If you really look at the mythology of the character, we would have to figure out some reason to get him going again. Because he is a guy who walked away from everything, so we just have to solve that. And Paul and I haven’t been able to do it. And we really wanted to make another one; we almost were making one a couple of years ago – and then we just couldn’t crack it. Because the second we said that we’d do it, they would announce a release date and then we would be making the movie. That happened to us on the last one. We did not have a script and we had a release date. And that was just harrowing.”

It’s good to see Damon and Greengrass take their time with the plot especially as that is something Hollywood is not good at doing right now. With so many sequels for big films following too soon after the first movie, it just results in the sequels feeling rushed and unoriginal.

Rumours from way back in August 2013 until July this year were that Damon was in talks to return as Bourne, but many shrugged it off as being too farfetched or wild. It looks like those ‘wild’ reports weren’t too ‘wild’ then.

So where will Jason Bourne go from here?

The last time we saw him was floating in a river after supposedly being shot, but we knew all too well that he had escaped death’s grasp and was probably going to go into hiding from Medusa.

The plot would obviously have to bear in mind the events of Jeremy Renner’s The Bourne Legacy, because that is now considered cannon to the franchise. The plot for Jason Bourne’s return is so far being kept firmly under wraps; however, the plot for the sequel to The Bourne Legacy is not.

The sequel to the 2012 film will follow Aaron Cross again, but now he is the last surviving member of Operation Outcome – a group of black ops agents with chemically enhanced physical and mental capabilities that were betrayed and terminated by a dark and powerful black ops team deep within the CIA.

Aaron Cross survived and is still at large and their sinister activities are threatened: Operation Larx – their next generation of super assassins is in jeopardy. Larx agents are despatched to hunt Cross down and remove his threat.

The chase moves to China and the streets of Shanghai as Cross stays one step ahead of the closing Larx agents in a desperate bid to find a second Outcome agent that could be his salvation and that could help him take the fight to the agency.

Yes, the second “outcome agent” could be Jason Bourne himself, and that might be the reason why there will be a Bourne film before this one: to show how Bourne has got to where he is after the events of Ultimatum. While the Bourne Legacy sequel will finally have the getting together of Bourne and Aaron Cross; so possibly the sixth film in the franchise might be the grand finale – or not, who knows.? There are 12 novels in total.
