Far Cry 4 Is A Marked Improvement Over Far Cry 3
Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson, in a recent interview, explained how the fourth entry in the popular open-world shooter series represents a “significant step forward” over 2012’s Far Cry 3. Hutchinson specifically discussed what Ubisoft needs to pull off and accomplish in order to provide a memorable and worth-while sequel.
“Work started almost immediately after Far Cry 3, and I joined a while after that,” Hutchinson said in an interview with energy drink company RedBull. “The idea is always to build on the best and most successful elements from the previous game and integrate new features and ideas to make sure it’s fresh and that the game takes a significant step forward. For me, the most important things are enabling more player agency, building better tools and adding co-op so people can create more interesting player stories, and trying to make a seamless experience.”
Ubisoft Montreal – the studio that is heading development on Far Cry 4 – chose the Himalayas as the new setting mainly because it is a place that “challenged gameplay in a new way,” Hutchinson went on. The verticality of the Himalayas allows for just that. But Hutchinson was reluctant to state how the game’s competitive multiplayer – developed by Red Storm Entertainment – will be affected by this particular setting. But he did tease that both Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Shangai are also developing “a series of missions set in an all-new environment outside of the [Far Cry 4] game world.” Ubisoft will discuss these missions “shortly” he confirmed.
And as for the game’s main villain, Pagan Min, Hutchinson discarded claims that he’s insane – just like Vaas was in Far Cry 3. “I think he’s so rich and powerful in Kyrat that he doesn’t operate in the same world as the rest of us.” To further differentiate Min from Vaas, the former has an interesting relationship with protagonist Ajay Ghale.
“He wants to be his buddy, and you’ll find out why in the course of the game,” Hutchinson said. “But we really didn’t want another villain who would threaten the player and who you knew, in the end, that you would have to defeat–there’s no emotion in that.”
Far Cry 4 is slated to release on November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC. You can check out our impressions of the game here.
