Xbox Entertainment Studios Shuts Down, Halo TV Unaffected
Following the recent news of Microsoft’s most severe layoffs in its history, the company is closing down Microsoft Entertainment Studios. But despite this closure, both Halo TV and Halo: Nightfall won”t be affected.
Re/Code broke the story, which Head of Xbox Phil Spencer ha since confirmed. “I hope you have had a chance to read today’s mails from Satya [Nadella, CEO of Microsoft]. I wanted to take a moment to share a few thoughts on what this means for our team and some of the changes we are making as a result.
“… As part of the planned reduction to our overall workforce announced today and in light of our organization’s mission, we plan to streamline a handful of portfolio and engineering development efforts across Xbox. One such plan is that, in the coming months, we expect to close Xbox Entertainment Studios.”
Most, if not all of Microsoft’s upcoming projects will still be released. As mentioned, both Halo TV and Halo: Nightfall are still on , alongside the upcoming documentary series Signal to Noise, with its first episode about Atari still coming.
A few key members of Xbox Entertainment Studios will stay on to oversee said projects, including Nancy Tellem a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to IGN. Phil Spencer also confirmed that Microsoft’s commitment to entertainment apps for the Xbox One won’t change. “… Our app partnerships with world-class content providers bringing entertainment, sports, and TV content to Xbox customers around the world are not impacted by this organizational change in any way and remain an important component of our Xbox strategy,” he said.
Halo Nightfall will come packaged in with The Master Chief Collection later this year while Halo TV is expected to premier next year.
