Sigourney Weaver is Ready For More Aliens
The last time we saw Sigourney Weaver as Alien-killing space engineer, Ellen Ripley, was in the Jean-Pierre Jeunet 1997 flop Alien: Resurrection, which upset many fans as the generic action and lifeless plot blew the franchise into free fall; in part, due to Fincher’s last Alien film which killed off two of the franchise’s biggest characters: Hicks and Newt, leading many to believe Weaver would be finished with the Alien universe. However, Weaver has spoken out about the Aliens’ universe future at the Hero Complex Festival’s Q&A.
“There’s more story to tell” she said. “I feel there’s a longing in certain groups of fans when I meet them, for the story to be finished because we really left it up in the air and I feel a bit badly about that because I was part of that decision making process. I didn’t want to make four and five in a bundle. I think it’s hard to make these films all in a big lump. You need time to sort of let things resonate so I can imagine a situation where we could at least finish telling her story.”
Usually taking six or seven years to make a sequel can be a good thing, but not in Aliens’ case: the franchise lacked passion after James Cameron’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien.
This is obviously terrific news for Alien lovers, who will certainly be wondering if Weaver is hinting at a return in the form of Scott’s sequel to 2012’s Prometheus. We heard recently that the next installment in the prequels will start filming this fall, with Scott and Weaver having been seen meeting in a private location to “talk.”
Questions have been raised as to whether this was a meeting on how Scott wanted to use Ellen Ripley as some kind of bit-part in Prometheus 2, as the two leads are already signed on with the likes of Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender. Still, Ripley could be a huge part of the story, even though it would have to take place some time after the Alien films for it to make sense for her character to turn up.
Whatever happens, we’ll keep on hoping for an announcement on the Aliens’ universe soon, as spin off movies have been recently hinted at.
Let me know below what you think of Sigourney’s comments, and whether you think she will appear in the next Prometheus?
