Mario Kart 8 Sells Over A Million Copies In One Weekend

Nintendo has revealed that its eagerly anticipated new entry in the Mario Kart series, Mario Kart 8, has gone on to sell 1.2 million copies in its first weekend on the market. Sales include that of the North American, European, and Japanese market. Another interesting tidbit Nintendo discussed is that the game continues the company’s tradition of releasing high quality first-party titles. Mario Kart 8 is the 14th Wii U game to launch in the US to have a Metacritic score of 85 or higher.

Nintendo of America’s President and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime wrote in a statement the following, “The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead. This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!”

Global sales of the Mario Kart franchise has surpassed a whopping 100 million units as of late March, 2014. Mario Kart Wii remains the best selling installment in the series, with 35.53 million units sold. Mario Kart DS ranks in second with 23.56 million units.
