Oculus Planning To Build Billion-Person MMO With Facebook
Oculus announced during an event during at TechCrunch Disrupt, covered by The Verge, that they want to build a massively multiplayer experience with one billion users.
When Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion, both companies did not talk about their plans for the future. Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe spilled the beans by telling attendees, “this is going to be an MMO where we want to put a billion people in VR.”
Oculus wanted to be apart of a company that has a bigger user base than a traditional gaming company would have had. Iribe says that the Oculus is still committed to games and gamers. While Notch had a different idea on the purchase, even with canceling Minecraft for the Oculus Rift, Oculus realized that a focus on games could reach a limit, since consoles do not sell as well as mobile devices. “Do you want to build a platform,’ said Iribe, ‘that has a billion users on it, or only 10, 20, or 50 million?”
With the money acquired during the purchase, Oculus can now make the Oculus Rift for cheaper and faster. However, the billion-person MMO is in the distant future, it is interesting to see what Oculus wants to do with it’s software.
