Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands

New Prince of Persia in Development

A new Prince of Persia game is in development. According to French gaming website, Le Portail du Jeu Video, the game will be a 2-D platformer and will utilize the UbiArt engine, which was previously used in Rayman Legends and is featured in the upcoming RPG Child of Light.

According to the website’s sources, “the game uses the same techniques of animation in the last Rayman,” and that “this provides a real diversity/credibility in the postures and movements of the hero.” The website reports that the Prince character will be able to run, jump and use the sword against walls, just like previous games in the Prince of Persia series.

In Jan. 2013, Ubisoft told Eurogamer that the “Prince of Persia is being paused.” At the time a game project called Osiris had leaked onto the internet and was heavily rumored to be a new Prince of Persia game. This was later revealed to be a cancelled Ubisoft project.

The Prince of Persia series was originally a trilogy of 2-D platformers available on a variety of home gaming consoles in the 1990s. The series found its way to Ubisoft Montreal, who rebooted the series with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which brought the series into 3-D and received critical acclaim. After two sequels, the series was rebooted once more in 2008 with Prince of Persia.

There hasn’t been a new entry in the Prince of Persia series since 2010 with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, which revisited the Sands of Time Trilogy and coincided with the release of the film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This isn’t counting 2013’s smartphone remake of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame.

Ubisoft hasn’t yet confirmed or denied reports of a new Prince of Persia game.
