Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth Announced, Heads To Alien World

2K and Firaxis Games have announced today that the next version of the Civilization franchise is in development: Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth. The new title sends players from Earth to colonize an alien planet and develop a new civilization on the foreign world.

Beyond Earth is highly unique in the series in that it will begin with modern or futuristic technologies and advance far into the future, unlike previous titles in the series which start players far in the past to develop their civilizations. Technical progression will be nonlinear, unlike previous versions, which often required a fully realized tech tree to advance deeper into the technologies.

The alien planets will be nothing like you’ve seen in the Civilization series before, outside of mods.

Quests will be a new addition to the original formula of the Civ series as well, guiding new colonists into a series of side missions helping with the collection of resources necessary to advance in the game.

Another addition that has been a long time in the making is an orbital layer, or a section of map allowing the deployment of satellites for various offensive, defensive and support roles.

The newest version is in development for Windows, Mac and Linux and is expected to release this fall at a price point of $49.99.
