H1Z1, Sony’s New Zombie Apocalypse MMO, Detailed by SOE President
Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has announced more details on the game studio’s upcoming MMO H1Z1. Smedley did this via Reddit thread late last night.
H1Z1 will be set 15 years after the outbreak of a zombie virus, and players will have to scavenge to survive. The game will feature crafting, and combat against the undead, various forms of wildlife, and other players. The crafting system is expected to be very deep, allowing for “a huge variety of awesome stuff, including weapons and things like Molotov cocktails, explosives.. and other fun surprises.”
The game will run on SOE’s Forgelight engine and will be a persistent world on several servers with different rule sets. The focus on H1Z1 will be building and sandbox survival, instead of outright collect and kill like many current zombie games. The game will feature a robust building and ownership system that will allow the construction of everything from bandit camps to full towns.
“We want our players to make Woodbury from The Walking Dead if they want to. Or take over a prison. Or fix an old car so you and your friends can run zombies and players over mercilessly, and revel in the sheer delight of hearing a zombie scream as you light it on fire, or craft a gun to take down your friends and enemies alike,” said Smedley. “If you prefer a quiet life as a farmer raising crops… we’re going to make sure your zombie apocalypse fantasy is complete. If you’re like me and you want nothing more than to kill everything that moves, by all means see how that goes. It’s going to be a blast!”
