The Trailer Report – 4/4/14
Hello, all you movie watchers out there! Welcome to The Trailer Report, where we’ll break down all of the week’s biggest movie and TV trailers, and try our best to answer the ultimate question for all trailers: Does it look good?
This week we’ve got sex tapes, crazed murderers, super-powered heroines, and a couple of very angry old men.
Let’s get started:
The Angriest Man in Brooklyn
A chronically enraged man is told he has 90 minutes to live and attempts to reconcile past mistakes.
Does it look good? Eh. It certainly works well as a Robin Williams vehicle, as it will allow him to yell and gesticulate as wildly as he is inclined to. But this whole setup seems like that of a wacky comedy, and yet the tone seems to be somewhere in the dramedy, self-discovery realm. It all feels a bit off because of that disconnect, but still could be an entertaining enough time waster.

Does it look good? Another eh, but this one slightly more optimistic. It looks like a fairly simple romantic narrative, but Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley both seem charismatic, and the director knows his way around music (being behind the excellent Once). But, really, what little we got of the music that was going to be in the film sounded really, really bad, like cheap commercials songwriting. And apparently Ceelo and Adam Levine are actors now? Is this secretly just one big ad for the next season of The Voice?
A bar acting as a criminal bank is robbed, throwing its two owners into the sights of gangsters.
Does it look good? Yeah, it does. It looks like a low key kind of crime drama, with strong looking performances from both Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini (who seems to have completed quite a bit of work before he passed last year). It’s also from a story by Dennis Lehane, who wrote Gone Baby Gone, which is definitely a plus. The director is a question mark, but the style looks suitably dark and dreary. Overall, I’m looking forward to this one.
A young woman comes into contact with an experimental drug, opening her mind and giving her fantastical powers.
Does it look good? Hmm, I don’t know. On the one hand, it looks cool, what with all the crazy superpowers she seems to get throughout the movie, and stylized action looks fun, per usual for Luc Besson. And I do appreciate that this seems to be a straight ahead female starred super-powered hero, because as we all know, there is a dearth of those. On the other hand, it looks pretty damn goofy too. Is anyone really still using that dumb “10% of your brain” thing anymore? That was hackneyed back when they did it to explain telekinesis in The Shadow a decade ago. And while Luc Besson has always been good at action, he’s also been terrible at tone, tending to veer into the silly without notice, especially in the last few years. And as much as everyone loves Scarlett Johansson, no one seems to want to admit that she has the range of a 2 string guitar. One of these days a director is going to ask her to genuinely emote, and then you’ll all know.
A Night In Old Mexico
A disillusioned old cowboy takes his estranged grandson on a thrill seeking trip to Mexico.
Does it look good? Ha, well it depends, how much do you enjoy getting yelled at by cantankerous old men? It really seems like your enjoyment of this one is going to hinge largely on how much you like Robert Duvall, as it looks like most of the movie is going to be him being obstinate. There’s also something about Mexican drug money or some such, but it really just looks to give Duvall something to do. These kinds of themes (old men not wanting to wither away) were done pretty well in the recent Stand Up Guys, but that one was mostly played for comedy; it’ll be interesting to see how well this more dramatic look at it fairs.
The Purge: Anarchy
Another night of The Purge, in which all crime is legal, finds a group of innocents caught outside and trying to survive in the midst of the chaos.
Does it look good? Well it certainly looks better than the original. The concept is a novel one (if absurd), but the original movie pulled a bait and switch by ending being a standard home invasion thriller that barely even used the ideas. This one at least seems to use its basis, with a lot of the action seeming to focus on the violence happening in the streets. They seem to be walking a line between action and horror, and I would immensely prefer they ere on the side of action, but we’ll see. I am a little concerned about the last bit, which implies they could get into some torture porn areas, which would be very disappointing.
A couple looking to spice up their marriage film a sex tape, only for it to make it to their friends and family.
Does it look good? The third eh of the week. It doesn’t look terrible, it just doesn’t look very funny. Cameron Diaz has always been just this side of acceptable in comedies, and Jason Segel is usually solid when he’s with the Apatow crew, so that’s not it. I think it’s mostly the fact that there weren’t really any jokes in this trailer (the “Lincoln” line being the exception). I do appreciate the wacky reactions and improv stylings of these types of movies, but I sometimes really miss genuinely well constructed jokes. The director here is the same one behind Bad Teacher, and it looks very similar in tone, so I’d venture that if you liked that one then this should be for you too.
