Mario Kart 8 To Have 32 Courses – And More!

A ton of news was released about Mario Kart 8 today at a San Francisco preview event, as producer Hideki Konno and director Kosuke Yabuki discussed many of the features that players will see in Mario Kart 8.

Firstly, players will have a total of 32 tracks to race on in Mario Kart 8. 16 of these are new original courses, and 16 are returning favourites from previous games. Included in these 32 tracks are not one, but two rainbow roads. One being a Mario Kart 8 original and one being the remixed classic of the N64 track.

Match item-customization will also be returning to Mario Kart 8, after being introduced in Mario Kart 7. “There was some item customization in Mario Kart 7, in that you could choose to have a mushroom-only race or shell-only race. We’re going to have that plus a little bit more, actually, in Mario Kart 8,” Yabuki said during a round-table interview at GDC last month.

Mario Kart 8 will also see the introduction of two new items, the Piranha Plant and the Boomerang. The Piranha Plant will attach to your cart and chomp passing-by drivers, while the boomerang can be thrown at opponents to stun them. These are not the only new items to look out for however, as there are reportedly two more items still to be announced.

The game, which is set to release on May 30 for Wii U, is the latest iteration in Nintendo’s long running Mario Kart franchise.
