Microsoft: Expect An “Army Of Franchises” At E3
In a GDC interview with Gamespot, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has stated that he expects “an army of franchises” at this year’s E3, with major announcements from Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Activision, and etc.
2014 has been pretty rough so far for the games industry, what with the major layoffs hitting several studios. Renowned Bioshock developer Irrational Games has completely shut its doors, and Sony Worldwide Studios has undergone significant shifts and layoffs as well, with major talent departing.
But Spencer, explaining that he doesn’t know the specifics of every situation, maintains that the triple-A games business remains intact and successful as ever, and is confident this will be made evident once E3 2014 rolls around.
“I don’t think it’s a reflection of the vibrancy of the industry,” Spencer said. “If you look at attach rate on the consoles right now, people investing in the great new AAA IP, it’s great. I think at this year’s E3 between us and EA and Activision, Sony, and Nintendo, you’re going to see another army of huge franchises coming.”
Spencer pits the blame on development changes, and the increasing demand to create a proper triple-A title as the culprit behind these layoffs. But he does expect development to become more steady as the industry’s procedures and practices become normalized.
“I think the model for how studios deal with that peak and valley is still evolving,” he said
