Diablo III In Development On Xbox One As Well As PlayStation 4

Blizzard has confirmed to VideoGamer that they are currently developing Diablo III for the Xbox One at the same time as the previously announced PlayStation 4 version. While there is no confirmation of release on the Xbox One, the company states that it “makes more sense” to develop for both platforms at the same time, instead of trying to play catch up if and when exclusivity drops.

The specific version alluded to is Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition, currently only slated for release on the PlayStation 4. Blizzard is developing the game for the Xbox One pending a deal with Microsoft to release the game on the new console. “We have that pipeline worked out,” said Alex Mayberry, Diablo III‘s lead producer. “We’ve already done it with the 360 and PS3, so that team knows how to develop at the same time for both of those platforms. That’s just what we do. And then Blizzard and Microsoft can work out whatever they work out.”

The release date is “not far off” according to Mayberry. (Ed: This, however, may just be Blizzard’s trademark Soon, so Diablo fans shouldn’t necessarily be looking for it next week.)

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions were announced separately as well, but released simultaneously, so it may just be a matter of working out a deal.

The Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition includes the base game and the Reaper of Souls expansion, due for release on PC and Mac tomorrow.
