The Trailer Report – 3/21/14
Hello, all you movie watchers out there! Welcome to The Trailer Report, where we’ll break down all of the week’s biggest movie and TV trailers, and try our best to answer the ultimate question for all trailers: Does it look good?
This week we’ve got cute mechanical aliens, unscrupulous politicians, and yet another teenager ridden dystopian future.
Let’s get started:
Earth To Echo
A group of young kids find a very cute alien that has crash landed and do their best to protect him.
Does it look good? Could be, though I’m decidedly split on two aspects of this one. On one hand, the plot looks like a great sort of throwback to the types of sci-fi kids movies we got in the 80’s; it looks to have elements of The Goonies, E.T., The Explorers, and even The Flight of the Navigator (which was always one of my personal favorites). On the other hand, the shoving in of the found footage angle doesn’t do anything for me, and I’m not sure about the acting of the kids, that’s always a point of contention in these type of movies. Still, I’ll give it a shot.
The Maze Runner
A young man awakens with no memories in a land full of boys with similar amnesia stories, who are all forced to enter a very dangerous maze.
Does it look good? Again, possibly. Of all the YA adaptations that have sprung from the Twilight/Hunger Games success, this looks like one of the better ones. The trailer kept me guessing, and I still don’t have much clue on what’s happening (a good thing for a movie whose mystery seems a central point). I get a very small bit of a Lord of the Flies vibe too, which is very cool. Here’s hoping they keep the love triangling to a minimum in this one.
Nymphomaniac Vol. II
A woman continues to recount her history of sexual abandon and promiscuity.
Does it look good? Nah. I already covered my thoughts on Lars von Trier a month ago when the first volumes trailer was released, and nothing here has changed my mind. If anything, this second half looks even stranger and more vulgar than the first; no doubt as we’ll see her sexual addiction lead her down into some kind of depths. Nothing about this even strikes me as that interesting, just exploitative.
A man finds himself quarantined and in the center of a government investigation after being exposed to something mysterious and alien.
Does it look good? Yeah, it does. At the very least, it’s certainly got my curiosity piqued. I’m not even entirely sure what kind of movie I’m looking at, to be honest. The front half of the trailer looks to be standard “young people encounter aliens or some-such” fare, but then the third quarter seems to focus more on the quarantine/government angle of it, and the last quarter starts throwing some far out Sci-Fi imagery. Overall, it looks pretty intense, and definitely has my interest.
Veep – Season 3
The continuing adventure of Vice President Selina Meyer, as she now attempts to begin running for the office of President.
Does it look good? Definitely. If you haven’t been watching Veep, get on that. It’s a wry, sarcastic, mean little chunk of political satire full of deplorable people bickering and backstabbing and insulting each other at every opportunity. This season should amp that up even more as the race for the presidency will no doubt bring out the worst in this already pretty bad crew.
That’s it for this week. Let me know in the comments which of these you’re most excited about, and which ones you want nothing to do with.
Until next week!
