Kojima Didn’t Expect Metal Gear Solid To Be A Hit

Speaking during a recent Q&A on Twitch, Kojima revealed that he never expected Metal Gear Solid to be a hit. The success of 1998’s Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation 1 was a surprise to him.

“Neither me nor anyone else expected Metal Gear Solid to sell at all,” Kojima said when asked what his favorite game in the series to develop was. “So I was fortunate, because I didn’t have to think, ‘I have to sell this game this much,’ so pretty much all I did was put in that game all the things I really like.”

Metal Gear Solid, as is well known, has gone on to become one of the most popular game series, selling over 33 million copies as of April 2013. The latest game in the series is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is slated for release sometime next year. The prequel to the fifth major entry in the series, Ground Zeroes, is launching on March 18 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Apparently, the prequel contains several controversial scenes that both Kojima and Konami had to defend a couple of weeks ago.
