Flash Game of the Week: Once Upon a Life
Despite being a flash game Once Upon a Life has one of the sweetest and bittersweet stories I have ever seen in a game. The story for Once Upon a Life takes the lead role in the player’s experience and is supplemented by some good voice acting and a great soundtrack that helps to tell this tearjerker of a story. It also doesn’t hurt that this game is also fun to play.
The game starts off with Harry Dicky losing photos from his scrapbook due to a gust of wind and sets in motion a grand adventure for Harry. As you play you will notice that two stories will play out as you progress. The main story follows Harry as he collects his lost photos, but every time you complete a level you learn a little bit more about Harry’s Life. You will start from Harry’s childhood to all the way up to when he is moved to a retirement home. Not to give away any spoilers but the story gets very emotional as you learn about Harry’s family and life, and you start to feel connected to the charters as you collect his treasured mementos. It is also adorable to hear Harry recount his life story as the voice acting is exceptional.
Even without the emotionally investing story the game is still a solid adventure game with good platforming and puzzle elements. In each level you must collect three photos before you can advance to the next level. The cool thing about the gameplay here is that Harry’s canes act as jet packs but you only have a finite amount of fuel in each level so you must be careful in how you use it. There are also coins that you can collect throughout each level that will add a degree of difficulty for you perfectionists. The world design for Once Upon a Life is delightful as each level is unique and you get to visit some exotic locales. You get to visit places like outer space and the open sea as you progress through the game. There are some cool puzzles that you will encounter in each level such as having to call a shark to demolish a building.
Once Upon a Life is a great game and everyone that likes gaming in general should try it out. This is a remarkably bittersweet story that is executed brilliantly and should be seen by as many people as possible. If you don’t shed a tear by the end of your playthrough than you are not human.
