February Games With Gold Announced: Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War
With one day to go before the next game in Microsoft’s Games with Gold program drops, they have finally announced what you will be able to get. February is bringing us the zombie thriller Dead Island, along with the zany action of Toy Soldiers: Cold War.
Announced today on Major Nelson’s blog, these two games will be staggered throughout the month, like the rest of the games on the program. Up first is Dead Island, which will be available for download starting tomorrow and running through Feb. 15th. Deep Silver’s zombie title isn’t perfect, but it does have a gorgeous open world (until you hit the sewers anyway), fun cooperative play and satisfyingly visceral combat. You could do worse than wasting a weekend burning through it, although be warned, it does start to drag near the end.
From the 15th to the end of the month, you can pick up Signal Studio’s action/tower defense hybrid Toy Soldiers: Cold War. This was a game I reviewed when it first came out, and its zany blend of humor, solid gameplay and fun minigames make it well worth a purchase, must less a free pick-up. It may not be for everyone, but I had a hard time putting it down. The minigames are particularly fun, and multiplayer is worth experiencing just so you can play as the Russians and drop a Dolph Lundgren-style soldier onto the field. Totally worth it.
Some (like myself) have blasted the program in the past for being a disappointment, while others here feel like it is a good service that just needs a little work. It’s nice to see that, after arguably its best month yet, the service is continuing to give out solid games.
