Neil Blomkamp Rumored to Direct Halo TV Series Pilot

Neil Blomkamp, known for directing District 9 and Elysium, is rumored to be the director of the pilot for the upcoming Halo TV series according to Latino Review. Microsoft announced back in its E3 2013 press conference that Steven Spielberg has signed on to be a producer for the show.

Around 2007, Blomkamp was originally slated to direct the Halo movie before production on the film ultimately fell through. The South African director created a trilogy of short films set in the Halo universe to promote Halo 3’s release in 2007, and was going to work with Peter Jackson to create an official film adaptation of the Halo series. But a myriad of problems arose, and the project was scrapped. Blomkamp and Jackson then decided to work on District 9, which turned out to be both a critical and box office success, earning a Best Picture Nomination in 2009.

Although the Halo movie never came to fruition, Blomkamp has still expressed considerable interest in the franchise. During an event promoting Elysium in April 2013, Blomkamp said, “I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film.”

However, he does have some concerns of trying to adapt a series that is so ardently loved by millions of fans. “But that’s the problem. When something pre-exists, there’s this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film’s interpretation of the same intellectual property,” Blomkamp said. “Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn’t appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing.”
