Sony Prepping for Slimmest Launch in PlayStation History

According to an invitation sent to several outlets, Sony is preparing for the slimmest launch in PlayStation history.

As of right now, Sony has yet to reveal exactly what it will showcase, though here is what the invitation reads: “Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest.” Odds are that the PS Vita Slim, which is available for Japan and rumored for release in North America, will be officially announced for the West.

The PS Vita Slim is 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the original PS Vita, which launched in North America back in February 2012. The OLED panel on the original PS Vita was replaced by an LCD panel on the PS Vita Slim, which helps boost battery life to an hour longer.

Seeing as how the PlayStation 4 launched just two months ago, it is highly unlikely that Sony will announce a slimmer version of its home console. As far as the PlayStation 4 is concerned, we expect a slimmer version to be announced further along in its life cycle.

The announcement is set for Thursday, January 30 and will go from 12:00-2:00 p.m. ET.
