Shadow of Mordor Is “Not A Movie Game”

With the recent, and impressive, new gameplay footage of The Lord of the Rings spin-off Shadow of Mordor hitting the web, it has been revealed that the game won’t tie in with J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy in anyway.

Academy Award winner Peter Jackson, director of the The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, advised developer Monolith Productions to not make a movie game.

“The thing he really pushed us to do and was really supportive of doing was to not make a movie game,” Monolith design director Michael de Plater told GameSpot. “He’s like ‘make the best game you can that’s not a movie game.’ There’s no point in trying to reproduce [the movies] as a game. So he was really supportive.”

Shadow of Mordor, instead, will tell an original story set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It follows Ranger Talion, who gains Wraith-like abilities after being slain by Sauron.

To add to fans’ expectations for the game, de Plater explained that not only is Peter Jackson closely involved with the project, but that Monolith is working with special effects and prop studio WETA Workshop, who have won several awards for their work on Jackson’s movie trilogy.

Warner Bros. also has “professional Tolkien scholars” on staff that “look after everything” that is being done by Monolith.

Shadow of Mordor will come to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC. No release date was announced and the title was not confirmed for the Wii U.
