Gravity Passes $500 Mil In Worldwide Box Office Sales

Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller Gravity reached a high point this weekend when it surpassed half a billion dollars at box offices worldwide.

This number is a combined total of the $240.6 mil earned domestically and the $274.3 earned worldwide, with 80% of these tickets being purchased for the 3D version of the film.

With a production budget of $100 mil and a 2.5x multiplier needed for a film to be considered financially successsful, this means that the film has officially crossed over from breaking even to being profitable.

Gravity stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and details the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day experienced by astronaut Ryan Stone as she tries to make her way back to Earth after seeing her space station destroyed by shrapnel from another. It’s a visually astounding film that tackles a wide variety of ideas and themes, including isolation, rebirth, and inner strength.
