Rockstar Confirms Microtransactions in GTA Online, Warns of Early Congestion

A rumor surfaced a few days ago that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto Online would feature online microtransactions to allow players to purchase in-game currency using real money.

Today, the developer confirmed that these microtransactions would be present in the game and would be used to allow players faster access to better homes, cars, articles of clothing, and guns.

It should be noted that the currency accrued in GTA Online will be separate from that earned in the game’s single-player story campaign.

Rockstar also advised players today that they should expect some online congestion in the first few days of GTA Online while they work to stabilize everything. Read their full quote below:

“One thing we are already aware of, and are trying to alleviate as fast as we can, is the unanticipated additional pressure on the servers due to a significantly higher number of players than we were anticipating at this point – we are working around the clock to buy and add more servers, but this increased scale is only going to make the first few days even more temperamental than such things usually are.”

GTA Online will launch on October 1st.
