PC Gamepad Review Roundup

Looking for a solid PC gamepad? I know the feeling quite well. You want a great, all-around solid controller for your PC games, and while the Xbox 360 controller is well-made and easy to use on a Windows PC, it’s not perfect (why the hell can’t Microsoft make a decent d-pad?), and it’s also pricey. Surely there’s a better cost-effective alternative that could be used for both retro AND modern gaming.

That’s what I thought, too. So, over the past month, I’ve purchased three PC gamepads, and thoroughly play-tested them all. Let’s take a closer look.

LOGITECH F310 – $24.99

The Logitech F310 disappointed me before I even bought it. It appeared to have the disconcerting disc-shaped d-pad that’s usually horrible for retro games or other games that make heavy use of it, but the person who recommended I try it said that this d-pad was different because it’s “floating”. Now that I was confused that my controller would have water in it, I checked the official website, and sure enough, the d-pad does not rest on a single pivot point, instead it “glides” over four switches for a more responsive, tactile feel.

Let me tell you, that is marketing bullshit at its finest because this d-pad is STILL terrible. I loaded up Contra, my go-to NES game for testing 8-way d-pads, and poor Bill kept having intermittent seizures when I tried to make him duck.

Having said that, there is nothing wrong with the rest of the controller. The buttons are responsive, the analog sticks are easily as good as a 360 controller’s, it’s made from durable hard plastic, so it’ll hold up well over time, and while it’s not exactly shaped like a PS2/PS3 controller, it fits comfortably in my hands. I can play Payday 2 for an extended period of time with no problems whatsoever.

So, the Logitech F310 is a good deal for the price, but if you already have a wired 360 controller, there’s literally no need to buy this, as it performs just as well. And if you’re a retro gamer, I’d avoid it entirely. And there may be a better option anyway….

The F310 gets a 7.5 out of 10.
