XCOM: Enemy Within is the Expansion to 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Within is the expansion to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a strategy game released in 2012 that was critically acclaimed for bringing in new players while at the same time pleasing old fans.

Speaking to GameSpot, designer Ananda Gupta said that the storyline of XCOM: Enemy Within lines up with that of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. “This is not a prequel and this is not a follow-on chapter that extends the story,” Gupta said. “Instead, [it’s] the same alien invasion that you confronted in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but with a lot of new stuff added.”

Enemy Within will add 8 new maps (bringing the total to 13), new weapons, equipment, and enemies. One of the new enemy types that has already been introduced is called the Mechtoid.

A new feature added in Enemy Within is Gene Mods, which augments your characters’ abilities by adding enhancements to different parts of the body. Gene Mods can be created from a new building called the Genetics Lab.

A brand new class is also being added called the MEC, or Mechanized Exoskeletal Cybersuit. This new Trooper Class will have a unique skill tree with different abilities. Each suit can also be enhanced with specialized weapons such as a grenade launcher of flamethrower.

Enemy Within also introduces a new resource in the form of Meld. Meld is unique compared to the other resources in the game because each container holding Meld has a self-destruct timer. This little difference can have a huge impact on your play style, as players who like to take their time and move slowly may have a harder time gathering Meld. Meld will also be added to the original maps of Enemy Unknown.

Gupta also mentioned that Offline Squad Editing was one of the most request features from fans of Enemy Unknown, and will now be added to Enemy Within. This lets players manage their squads offline with no time limit.

And for all the people who truly want to spice up their squad with a little diversity, languages for different nationalities will be available. Players can make their characters speak English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, or Polish.

Enemy Within is coming out November 12 on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Mac. The PC and Mac versions will cost $30, and the consoles versions will cost $40. The console versions will be labeled as the Commander Edition, and will have all previously released DLC for Enemy Unknown.
