WWE SummerSlam 2013 Review: A Must See

I can’t remember the last time we were given a SummerSlam this good. Usually at SummerSlam you either get one great match or just all around “okay”. But this one blew all the other ones out of the water. Let’s get to it:

Dean Ambrose (c) vs Rob Van Dam
United States Title Match

The kickoff match got us started on the right foot. Two solid workers just going at each other. Their match was decent. But I think some of it was ruined with The Shield coming in for the save. They have used this finish so many times that you can almost call it. I expect great things from Ambrose and I hope he will break the glass ceiling one day.

Kane vs Bray Wyatt
Ring of Fire Match

This is about what I expected. It was slow, awkward and not very good. The fire was merely there to keep the Wyatt family at bay and they found a way around the stipulation. But it appears this is only the beginning for the Wyatt family and Kane. I’m guessing they are going to brainwash Kane and make him a Wyatt family member.

Cody Rhodes vs Damien Sandow

R.I.P. Cody’s mustache. This match was decent enough. It was your standard match affair with Cody getting the upper hand. I’m loving Cody’s face turn but Sandow really could have used the win. The last time he won a match was probably at Money in the bank. I guess they aren’t making him out to be a strong champion if he wins.

Alberto Del Rio (c) vs Christian
World Heavyweight Title Match

This ended up being surprisingly good. These two have faced each other numerous times already and yet they were able to make it fresh and. The crowd was red hot for this match and that made it that much better. Alberto needed this win just to prove he doesn’t lose to Christian all the time and that he isn’t a joke of a champion. The biggest surprise of the night and I hope these two don’t feud again.

Brie Bella vs Natalya

These diva matches are given way too much time and this one was the bathroom break match. The Bellas are just awful in the ring and Natalya is just the best women’s wrestler right but she isn’t given any opportunities. At least she beat a Bella.

CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar
No Disqualification Match

Now this match was the match of the night and it definitely had everything you want in a match. It was a true David and Goliath formula that so many matches try to replicate but most don’t succeed. Punk sold everything that Brock threw at him and Punk gave him his own beating. There were tons of moments it looked like that Brock would tap. It had a perfect story with Punk wanting to get his hands on Heyman. It got the better of him but Punk looked like the biggest face of the company. This is a serious match of the year candidate.

Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs Big E Langston and AJ Lee

I would hate to have to be this match right now after that amazing match. This match’s job was to cool the crowd down for the big main event. It’s pretty bad though, when a match that is less than 5 minutes has a rest hold. Dolph picks up the win at least and they just need Ziggler to feud with someone else right now instead of his ex.

John Cena (c) vs Daniel Bryan
WWE Title Match

Finally, what we were all waiting for and it did not disappoint. I was worried when HHH was announced as the special ref because usually they get involved in the match somehow. To his credit, HHH acted like a ref and didn’t make himself known. This one had the emotions running high and people wanted so badly to see Bryan succeed. Bryan did his usual amazing job but I got to give credit to Cena. Not many people would go out and put over Bryan clean as a sheet. Cena, the next night on RAW got booed for his efforts. There were lots of submission attempts and Bryan even debuted a new finisher. Bryan got his moment in the sun for a little bit. The biggest non-surprise of the night was Orton cashing in his Money in the Bank. They did a good job though where it looked like Orton was just teasing a cash in but then HHH turned on him. I guess we are going to get a Orton and Bryan feud. This match had the wrestling, the story and the emotion going in. Although I did prefer Punk and Lesnar, this still was awesome.

Final thoughts:

Is this the best SummerSlam? Um, YES! You’ve got two awesome matches that will be remembered in WWE history and none of the matches were terrible. This is highly recommended and it just proves that WWE is having the best year right now.

This is the pay per view that we’ve all been waiting for and it didn’t disappoint. The WWE is finally starting to deliver in their content.
