Resident Evil 7 Will Feature More Survival Horror According To Capcom
Resident Evil 6 may not have done too well after the release, but Capcom are already looking to fix past mistakes for Resident Evil 7. In fact, Capcom have now confirmed that Resident Evil 7 will be returning to its survival horror roots, which is fantastic for any Resident Evil fans or fans of horror games in general! Capcoms Senior Vice President of Marketing, Michael Pattison, has said that the company has taken on board the criticisms directed at Resident Evil 6 by both gamers and the press, and the feedback will be used for the next game. He also listed The Last of Us and Tomb Raider as inspiration for the newest horror game, as both have a perfect mix of action and survival.
We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response. There were some great positives out of that, but it was a mixed bag, as we saw from the review scores. We have got to take that on-board, we can’t ignore that, and we have to take that onto the next game when we make the next Resident Evil.
Despite the heavy saturation of the market with zombie games (every game seems to come out with a zombie reference or zombie mode or zombie costume at the moment), Pattison feels that there is still a place for Resident Evil 7 on the market.
A lot is said about the saturation of this zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror. But it is still alive and well. The Last of Us shows a good direction of what consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content.
In case you haven’t played it, Resident Evil 6 seemed to be a Resident Evil game without much of the survival horror, more like a ‘run and gun’. Some people loved it, whereas others hated it with a passion. In fact it’s led pretty much everyone to have an opinion on what the horror genre needs next, and what it needs to do new that won’t make a boring or predictable game. Hopefully Capcom will really listen to what fans and press are saying and Resident Evil 7 will see a significant improvement in the series overall! I really hope so, as I grew up with Resident Evil so to see it potentially going badly actually makes me sad. What do you think Resident Evil 7 needs to make it a good Resident Evil game, or have the few bad games tarred the popular series? Here’s hoping Resident Evil 7 is the scariest one yet!
