The Top Anime Openings and Endings of the Summer 2013 Season
Last time I wrote about what I thought were the best anime series to watch this season. This time I am going over what I think are the best anime openings and endings of the season are. I picked these openings and endings for a variety of reasons. Some I thought were cute, others I thought had nice visuals and symbolism, while others may have just had a really good sounding song attached to it.
Top 5 Anime Openings
5) Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3
Stella Women’s Academy’s opening has a nice charm to it, showcasing the main characters whilst also teasing some of the other teams they would encounter during the course of the series. The true highlights of the opening for me, though, are seeing the main cast in their stylized looks towards the end of the theme and the accompanying song “Shape My Story” by Anna Yano.
4) Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Free!’s opening is probably more awesome than it should be. Great looking, fast-cut visuals swim across the screen as OLDCODEX’s “Rage On” plays. The opening in particular does a great job of highlighting the rivalry between Rin and his former childhood friends that form the titular swim club.
3) Attack on Titan
Now, what I am about to say might sound like blasphemy, but I prefer this season’s Attack on Titan opening to the incredibly popular opening for the show’s first season. I feel like Linked Horizon’s “Die Flügel der Freiheit” is a better song. In addition, I prefer the imagery used in this opening more, such as the sequence with a blood soaked Armin quickly darting his eyes. And above all else, I simply love how the opening goes from a proud sounding national anthem type song to a guitar shredding rock song using the shadowy figure of the mysterious Female Titan streaking across the screen as the transition.
2) Sunday Without God
Sunday Without God’s opening is as visually stunning as the show itself. In particular the use of golden French script that fades in and out is something that I really like. And that isn’t even touching upon Eri Kitamura’s “Birth”, which is just a beautifully sounding song. Kitamura’s emotional sounding vocals combine well with the choir vocalizations and the rocking instrumentals. The end result is an opening that is pleasing on both the eyes and ears.
1) WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look At It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular
I will be upfront: I have a soft spot for anime openings that use a metal song, so there might be a slight bit of bias here. That being said, I can’t help but love this opening. The mixtures of visuals used are just a pure treat, and the attached song, which shares the same name as the series and is performed by Konomi Suzuki and Kiba of Akiba, is just addicting to listen to, even with the slightly random lounge music break in the middle of it.
Top 3 Anime Endings
Now, there is a reason I only have a top 3 list for the endings, and that is because most of the time I find the endings to an anime to be rather forgetful, and something I easily skip. An anime’s ending has to be really memorable to get me to sit through the entire end credits, and these three endings keep me glued to the screen, and honestly, they actually make me look forward to the episode ending.
3) WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look At It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular
To say this is quite the contrast to Watamote’s opening is a huge understatement. The song is “No Matter How I Look At It, It’s Not My Fault” by Izumi Kitta, who is also Tomoko’s voice actress. The thing that I really like about this ending is the clever visuals done with Tomoko’s apparently never ending arsenal of smartphones. And let’s be honest, after an episode of Watamote, we kind of need a nice happy song.
2) Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
I probably shouldn’t love this ending as much as I do, and yet, well, I really freaking love this ending. Particularly the opening bit with the members of the swim club dancing in, well, a club, and the attached song, “Splash Free” by Style Five is just an earworm.
1) Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3
I’ll be frank, the long and short of why I have this as my #1 choice is because this ending is just so saccharinely cute, and just like Free!’s ending, the attached song, “Shoot ‘em! C3 Club!” sung by the voice actresses of the main cast, just dug itself into my brain and I can’t get it out to the point where my favorite part of a Stella Women’s Academy episode is it being over, and I say this as someone who genuinely enjoys the show itself.
