On Sunday August 4th, Scottish actor Peter Capaldi was introduced as the 12th actor to play the Doctor in long running BBC television series Doctor Who.  American audiences might remember Capaldi from when he played a W.H.O. Doctor in World War Z but  he is well known in Britain for his role as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It.

All around Peter Capaldi is not only a very skilled actor but will be a great fit for the character. As Capaldi is not only a lifelong fan of the TV series but he has also appeared  in “The Fires of Pompeii” episode of Doctor Who and in the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood as Permanent Secretary John Frobisher. This means that Capaldi is not only familiar to the world of doctor Who but he will  also be more likely to put everything he has into this role.

Capaldi ‘s role as Malcolm Tucker is the best piece of evidence for why Capaldi will be a great Doctor. In his role as Malcolm Tucker, he is the primary enforcer for the British Prime Minister and pretty much establishes himself as someone you do not want to meet in a dark room. Tucker is one of those characters that will give you the creeps when he forces a Member of Parliament to resign and then can have you laugh out loud when he is trying to describe Star Wars. Also, since Tucker was not afraid to do a little bit of backroom politics it will be interesting to see if the Twelfth Doctor would resort to some less than honorable means to win.  Since, Doctor Who is a more family friendly show than The Thick of it hopefully the writers can come up with some good fake swears that Capaldi can say whenever he gets angry, like the use of frak in Battlestar Galactica.

The good thing about Capaldi is that he has great range as an actor as he not only played the aggressive and in charge Tucker brilliantly but in Torchwood he showed that he could play someone more vulnerable. As Frobisher, Capaldi had to play a civil servant who is forced to hand over 10% of the world’s children in order to appease an alien threat. During this role, you can see Capaldi as a man that has been forced into a corner and must make a terrible choice because he is stuck between a rock and a hard place. This role also shows how Capaldi can play someone who has no real power and how someone that is vulnerable can make such horrible choices.

Given Capaldi ‘s work in the past this Doctor can turn out be very unique character.  I am looking forward to seeing how Capaldi will handle this role and I wonder what type of Doctor he will actually be. To finish this up, all I can say is that Christmas can’t come soon enough.
