Xbox One Cloud Makes AI 600% Better, Says Forza Dev Turn 10

Cloud seems to be the new ‘thing’ for Microsoft after SkyDrive and Office 365, as they announced that the Xbox One would also be using the technology. According to the Xbox manufacturer, cloud gives the next generation console extra power, something that has been widely dismissed by other developers. Still, it is an interesting feature that may come in handy. Turn 10, the developer of Forza Motorsport 5, has chimed in to the cloud computing discussion, offering their views.

In a first look, OXM were chatting to the studio manager, Alan Hartman, and creative director Dan Greenawalt of Turn 10 about their upcoming Xbox One game Forza Motorsport 5. Among other things, the talk turned to cloud computing. After all, we already knew that the game would use the Drivatar (still a weird sounding name to me) feature, which takes player data on how they drive and uses it to replace the need for completely random AI personalities.

“When you’ve got a learning neural network, more computing power is nothing but helpful. Because what you’re able to do is process a lot more information, and you don’t have to do it in realtime on the box… So we can now make our AI instead of just being 20%, 10% of the box’s capability, we can make it 600% of the box’s capability… Put it in the cloud and free up that 10% or 20% to make the graphics better – on a box that’s already more powerful than we worked on before.”

Now that sounds a hell of a lot better than Microsoft touting their Xbox Cloud computing would enable better graphics and all powerful consoles in next gen. Obviously, there is very little truth to the “600%” figure but we can glean that the AI in the game will be moved in order to make the game that much more pretty. Because that’s what next gen is all about right? That and lots of screen flares.
