Opinion: A Ratchet & Clank/Jak & Daxter Crossover Will Be Announced Tomorrow

It all fits so perfectly.

A couple days ago, Sony tweeted out this  peculiar image of a purple ring in space, with the caption “When worlds collide”.  That’s it.  Of course, the first thing that pops into most peoples heads is “crossover”.  Gamers love crossovers, and Sony has a history of mixing and matching their favorite franchises.  But what could it be?

A little clarity was shone on the matter yesterday.  After Sony’s image was splashed all over the web, Insomniac Games tweeted out their own take on the image.  As you can see, it is a little more fleshed out than the previous one, and carries the postscript “Heroes return”. Hmm, okay, maybe not that much clearer, but at least now we are getting somewhere.  Of course, Insomniac Games is the creator of Ratchet & Clank, along with a number of other franchises, so that doesn’t really narrow it down much.

But take a closer look at that second tweet.  Doesn’t that image look an awful lot like a warp gate from Jak & Daxter, shown below courtesy of IGN?

riftgateIt’s not an exact match, but its pretty darn close.  However, a few other factors lead me to this conclusion as well.  Sony has used both these characters in the past, and doesn’t seem like they are willing to let them slip off into the nether.  Having just finished up the somewhat disappointing Fuse, Insomniac may be looking to develop a lower-risk product.  However, I think it more likely that nStigate Games (formally Nihilistic Games) will develop the title.  They are free right now, having recently crapped out Black Ops: Declassified for the Vita, and they have a long history with both franchises.  Not only did they help develop both the original Jak & Daxter and the original Ratchet & Clank, they recently released PlayStation Move Heroesa game that just happened to feature both franchises.

I think it is likely will will either see a new crossover bewteen the two franchises, or perhaps PlayStation Move Heroes 2 for the PS4.  Hey, every new console needs a party game, right?  Well, not really, but I’ll put up with anything to play with Ratchet & Clank again.  nStigate recently announced they were dropping retail games in favor of downloadable ones.

What do you think?  Any opinions on this mystery project?
