Miyamoto Confirms That Nintendo is Working on a Brand New IP For the Wii U

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Shigeru Miyamoto confrimed that Nintendo is, in fact, working on a brand new IP for the Wii U.

He first mentioned that there are a string of great games in the works for the Wii U next year, then suggested that maybe it was time to make something new.

“With Mario Kart 8 coming out in the Spring of next year, we’ll have a good selection [of Wii U games] available, so I’m thinking isn’t it about time we release a new franchise?”

After a follow up question from Famitsu, Miyamoto confrimed the existence of a brand new IP:

“I can’t talk too much detail right now, but I will say that this new title has been keeping me busy lately.”

Nintendo has recieved a fair amount of criticism over the years for their tactic of reiterating and reusing the same franchises over and over, choosing to innovate in their base IPs rather than create an all new experience. This news comes as a big surprise and could possibly prove the be the next killer app for the Wii U. Of course, we have no details or ideas about what this IP could possibly be, but the idea of a brand new franchise from Nintendo is an exciting prospect indeed.

Keep it locked here for more news on this mysterious project as details roll out.
