Naughty Dog Will Not Create a New Engine for the PS4
Acclaimed developer Naughty Dog is well-known for creating some absolutely stunning looking games on the PS3. The Uncharted series has some of the best graphics around, and those games really showcased the graphical capabilities of the PS3. And when PS4 development time rolls around, Naughty Dog plans to stick with its current engine.
Naughty Dog revealed today to Digital Spy that it will continue to use its existing PS3 engine for development on the PS4. This is a far cry from their transition from the PS2 to the PS3, in which the company created a brand new engine, but encountered some major road blocks on the way as a result.
“We learned a big lesson coming from PS2 to PS3,” said The Last of Us game director Bruce Stanley. “We could have started with something there and then built off of it and only changed the pieces and parts as we needed, when we needed. And that really caused a lot of turmoil.”
Stanley continues by saying, “We scrapped everything at the beginning of Uncharted 1, and we had a perfectly good engine with the Jak & Daxter franchise.”
Of course, Naughty Dog plans continually update their engine as they hit different obstacles in next generation development. “When does the gameplay, when does the story, when does the world that we need to create – when does this engine hit the wall? Right, now we need to change this part of the engine.”
Naughty Dog’s upcoming game The Last of Us revolves around Joel and Ellie, two survivors trying to make it through a post-apocalyptic world, where most people have been infected with a strange virus.
The Last of Us demo is currently available for those have a copy of God of War: Ascension. For everyone else waiting for the full release, The Last of Us comes out on June 14 for the PS3.
