Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Officially Announced

The next iteration of the 2-D fighting game series Guilty Gear was announced today, and it’s called Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-.  Arc System Works, creators of the Guilty Gear franchise, officially unveiled Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- at their “Arc System Works Festival” at the Yokohama Pacifico venue.  There has been no release date or platforms announced as of yet.  The trailer can be seen below.

Like all Guilty Gear games, this new one continues the series’ tradition of having completely nonsensical titles.  Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-?  How do you even pronounced “Xrd”?  It’s right up there with Guilty Gear X2 #Reload: The Midnight Carnival and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus.

This new game also is being run on the Unreal Engine, which is a first for the series.  Guilty Gear is famous for its beautiful hand drawn sprites and intricate animations.  This trailer shows how impressive the Unreal Engine can be, powering gritty third person shooters like Gears of War, while also being the basis for a highly stylized 2-D anime fighter.

Of course this trailer had some rockin' metal. Because this is Guilty Gear.

From the bit of gameplay footage they showed in the trailer, it looks like Arc System Works isn’t deviating too much from the formula of what made the Guilty Gear games special.  There’s probably going to be a lot of complex mechanics and systems in play, and fans of the series will probably be happy with this next entry.  Whether Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is going to be able to draw in newer players who don’t have any experience with Guilty Gear is another quandary altogether.

It should be noted that the Arc System Works was the developer who created the fighting engine for Persona 4 Arena.  I personally came into Persona 4 Arena mostly for the story and the characters because I absolutely loved the Persona RPG’s.  But I came away from Persona 4 Arena enjoying the mechanics of the fighting system much more than I anticipated, even if I was really bad at the game.  Maybe this next Guilty Gear game will be the one that gets me into the series…
