The Wonderful 101 Gets a Release Date

During a Nintendo direct conference today, it was announced that the upcoming Platinum Games title The Wonderful 101 will be releasing  on the Nintendo Wii U on August 23 in the UK and on September 15th in the US. Nintendo has also said that we can expect to hear more details about the game and its eventual release in the coming weeks.

The Wonderful 101 looks to be an action strategy game that tasks players with controlling superheros in a Pikmin-like manner in order to combat villains and take on bosses to save a fictional city. Surprisingly, not much more is known about the game at this time, but it’s likely we’ll know more about it after E3.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata cited that he was excited to see the game release on Wii U and experience the work of Hideki Kamiya and the rest of the team at Japanese studio Platinum Games.

With titles such as Bayonetta, Vanquish, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Platinum is not new to the action game scene and has quickly become a fan favorite across all platforms. With tight controls and frantic combat, games such as Bayonetta and Vanquish have even topped lists as some of the best and most underrated games to release this generation. While we don’t know much about The Wonderful 101 and what it will be for the Wii U system, many are confident that the studio will be able to uphold its pedigree of talent and quality seen in games past.

The official release date of The Wonderful 101 will hopefully inspire some more Wii U sales, which Nintendo needs badly after a lackluster release for their new console and a dry spell of no new game releases on the touch screen-based system. While The Wonderful 101 isn’t likely to be a system seller, it could very well mark the beginning of a lengthy release schedule that brings many much-wanted and much-needed games to Nintendo’s platform.
