Dark Souls 2 Marketing Team Going “Guns Blazing”!

Namco Bandai has revealed that they are going to treat the release of Dark Souls 2 as a “massive triple-A title” from a marketing perspective. Speaking with OXM, Namco Bandai’s PR Director Lee Kirton revealed that the developer would do its utter best to market Dark Souls 2 well.

People who have been following the Souls games know that despite their cult-like following, they weren’t marketed like other big AAA-titles. “We’re going to go guns-blazing with it, and hope to God that it works.” Kirton went on to talk about the audience Namco will be targeting with this intense marketing scheme.

“We’re going after people who love and adore Dark Souls, while hopefully widening the net a little. I’m not saying that every Skyrim player’s going to be jumping on Dark Souls, but it would be nice if some of them did. It’s a different game, sure.”

Following the announcement, some players have expressed concern that Dark Souls 2 wouldn’t have the magic that made Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls so captivating. It’s also been argued that the difficulty of the game has turned players away. New developers Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura have since assured that the game will be just as hard, if not harder than the originals. Which begs the question, what can they do to attract players who aren’t used to dying every 4 minutes in a game?

Going “guns blazing” with the marketing of Dark Souls 2 will definitely draw a lot more attention from new players than Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. Namco Bandai has certainly lost no sleep over spending much more money on marketing strategies than the previous Souls games. However, will the unforgiving trademark of the Souls series be able to appeal to the new players that this marketing strategy draws in?

Dark Souls 2 is being developed for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. A release date has yet to be revealed.
