Epic Games’ Marketing Boss Joins Microsoft to Oversee Halo Marketing
It seems Epic Games’ is having some difficulty maintaining their roster. Over the course of a year, they have lost Gears of War producer Rod Fergusson, president Mike Capps, and design director Cliff Bleszinski. Now it seems yet another major role is opening as Epic Games’ Chief Marketer Kendall Boyd has joined Microsoft. He has been given the responsibility to direct all marketing on Microsoft’s flagship IP, the Halo franchise.
Serving as the director of worldwide marketing at Epic Games since 2010, Boyd has had the chance to manage the marketing for Infinity Blade, the Unreal Engine, famous ‘bro-shooter’ Gears of War, and even maintained the relationships between publishing companies such as EA, Microsoft, and Apple.
Microsoft’s official statement regarding their recruitment of Boyd was that:
“We can confirm that Kendall Boyd has joined Microsoft Studios as Director of Halo Global Marketing. We’re thrilled to welcome him into the Halo fold, but have no other details to share at this time.”
Boyd has had an amazing career thus far, as his previous employment included a senior product marketing manager position at EA for five years, and has shipped over 35 titles. Epic Games is in full support of Boyd’s decision as they stated:
“Yes, Kendall Boyd has left Epic Games to join our long-time partner Microsoft. We wish him well on his new adventure. We aren’t announcing our plans for the role right now.”
These changes starting happening, interestingly enough, right after we first heard about Chinese internet company Tencent’s $330 million investment into Epic Games last year. This gives Tencent the right to nominate members to the board of directors. Could the introduction of this new entity be hat has triggered so many employees at Epic Games to seek work elsewhere?
Microsoft on the other hand, seems to be doing very well even with the loss of Bungie, the original creator of the Halo franchise. Halo 4, the first Halo game to be released under 343 studios, raked in a whopping $220 million on launch day. Will Boyd be able to maintain this momentum? Only time will tell.
