The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Coming Out August 20
Back in 2010, 2K announced a first person shooter bearing the long dormant XCOM name. After several years of silence and a proper strategy focused XCOM game coming out in 2012, 2K has decided to change its first person shooter into a third person shooter and call it The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. It’s coming out on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on August 20th.
Developed by 2K Marin (the developer who made Bioshock 2), The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is set against the backdrop of the Cold War. It’s 1962, and tensions between America and the Soviet Union are at an all time high. But because this is an XCOM game, it turns out the real enemies are extraterrestrial aliens.
The Bureau is officially labeled a “third-person tactical squad-based combat game.” Players will be able to command their squad, prioritize certain enemies, and perform other tactics to make the game into a more strategy-centric third person shooter.
This shift into the tactical theme is undoubtedly a reaction to the immense public and critical acclaim XCOM: Enemy Unknown received when it was released in 2012. Firaxis, the developer behind the Civilization franchise, made XCOM: Enemy Unknown an accessible turned based strategy game that still had the core mechanics of what made the XCOM series so memorable. The Bureau will even have permanent death of squadmates. A staple in the XCOM strategy series, yes, but a new idea for the third person shooter genre.
Unfortunately, 2K only showed a live action teaser (posted below) and no actual gameplay footage of The Bureau, so we don’t know how all of these disparate ideas are going to come together. I’m scared that an amalgamation of so many different themes might make a game that isn’t far enough in one direction, and will end up being a middling third person shooter, or a mediocre strategy game. Regardless, I’m extremely curious how this game looks in action, and can’t wait to learn more.
