Guillermo de Toro Adapting Naoki Urasawa’s Monster for HBO
Acclaimed film director and writer Guillermo del Toro is adapting Naoki Urasawa’s Monster into a series for HBO. Monster is an 18-volume psychological thriller manga about a doctor who saves a young boy but loses his promising career in the process. Years later, that same doctor uncovers a plot of mass genocide organized by that boy he saved. Will the doctor make up for his decision and stop someone who may be the most evil sociopath that ever lived?
Originally planned to be a film, Naoki Urasawa’s Monster proved too expansive to compress into one film, so turning it into a series was a logical choice.
del Toro will co-write the story wit hSteven Thompson, writer of Dr. Who and Sherlock. With previous success adapting Hellboy and directing the stunning Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro seems right at home with taking on Naoki Urasawa’s Monster. Given HBO’s success with adapting works of fiction like Game of Thrones and the popularity of AMC’s adaption of The Walking Dead comic books, Naoki Urasawa’s Monster should turn out fine with a capable director like del Toro. The only question that remains is will anime and manga fans be open to a Hollywood adaptation of an acclaimed series?
Probably, as long as it doesn’t look like Dragonball Evolution.
