Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon Preview: It’s Real
If you happen to be a fan of Far Cry 3 and 80’s action movies (and I know there are so many of you out there) then look no further for your springtime video game purchase. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, which is set to release May 1st, is Ubisoft’s new 80’s arcade game spin off of the popular Far Cry series. With a price tag of only $15, and less than 10 hours of gameplay, we have to ask, what is Ubisoft doing?
Ubisoft hasn’t been seen in the arcade realm for a while. For the past couple of years they’ve focused on their big name franchises like Assassin’s Creed and their Tom Clancy games. But lately we’ve seen a shift, and in the past year they’ve come out with 9 or 10 new arcade games, ranging from small movie video games (like The Expendables 2 Video Game) and remakes of old titles (like Rayman 3 HD), to purely original titles.
Still, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is the first time we’re seeing a spinoff of one of their AAA title games on the arcade screen. It’s a move that not many video game developers use, and it’s a risky one. From now on, when someone looks at a list of the Far Cry franchise’s games, it’s going to be right there on top. And if it’s not a success, it could definitely harm the series.
But maybe Ubisoft shouldn’t be worried, because the game looks kick ass! From the numerous trailers I’ve seen circling around I think it’s safe to say that this game, alight being a small indie one, is going to get some attention from the media and fans.
Honestly, besides the mechanics and art templates from the original Far Cry, everything in the screenshots and trailers look entirely different. After watching IGN’s first 15 minutes of gameplay I don’t think anyone could have made the connection between Blood Dragon and Far Cry 3. The weapons, the colors, the cut scenes, the dialogue… everything is different, and everything is 80s.
In the game, you’ll follow the plot of an 80’s action movie with voice acting courtesy of Michael Biehn, who acted in all types of 80’s movies like Aliens and The Abbyss. You’ll follow his character through “the near future” world, full of a blend of 80’s technology and superhuman robots, as you try and save the world from evil nuclear destruction.
Yep, it’s all there, and it’s all real. Ubisoft is going all Saint’s Row 3 on our asses, and making a game where everything from the loading screen to the missions are over the top. Will it be a success? For both Ubisoft and the Far Cry franchise I hope so. Stay tuned to Leviathyn.com for our review of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon after it comes out on May 1st.
